Andy Beck- The Wainwrights in colour.

The sketches shown here are the images that I have so far produced for this "Wainwright". The views are taken from the exact spot where A.W. stood to illustrate his seven pictorial guides. The comparative views are mainly different due to the time of day, weather conditions and seasonal differences. The originals of my sketches are approximately twice as wide and twice as high as A.W's pen and ink drawings. I have added notes to give more information to each sketch.

As you can see from this list, Blencathra is the fell which A.W. illustrated most comprehensively. 33 sketches show off all the ridges, gills and details of this fine hill.

The foot of Middle Tongue. 18/11/08

The head of Gate Gill is formed by this spur of heather covered land. The summit ridge of the fell forms the skyline behind.

Old level Gategill mine. 18/11/08

A difficult reference to locate as due to rockfalls the level entrance is now almost closed off. The sloping platform of rock in the left foreground confirmed that it was the correct location.
