The summit. 3/10/08 Normally when obtaining these references I expect slight changes to the placement of rocks on the cairns etc. Bowfell is different. Compared to AW's drawing from the same point the large flat boulder on the left has appeared. Judging by its size it must weigh at least 1/2 a ton. Did he omit it for some reason? I doubt it. I guess we will never know but there it sits and now it is included in my sketch. Update: Following a return visit to the summit I think I have solved the mystery of the flat slab of rock in the foreground. Undoubtedly it wasn't there in AW's time, in the intervening period this boulder has broken off a large outcrop of rock about a metre and a half from the left of this picture. I'm guessing that this happened due to a lightning strike which would account for the distance between the original piece of rock and where the slab now lies. (Back to on location 8.7.09)
