Andy Beck- The Wainwrights in colour.

The sketches shown here are the images that I have so far produced for this "Wainwright". The views are taken from the exact spot where A.W. stood to illustrate his seven pictorial guides. The comparative views are mainly different due to the time of day, weather conditions and seasonal differences. The originals of my sketches are approximately twice as wide and twice as high as A.W's pen and ink drawings. I have added notes to give more information to each sketch.

All images are the copyright of the artist.

Brae Fell.                                                     1920' approx.

Brae Fell from fellside

Brae Fell from Fell Side. 17/5/09

Nothing has changed in this aspect of the fell apart from the recent enclosure for a new plantation. in the future the view from here will be obscured by the trees.

Brae Fell

Brae Fell from Birk Moss. 20/5/09

It was an unusual route towards Iron Crag that got me to this viewpoint, one that was very similar still to the one that AW saw. (back to On Location 20/5/09 click here )

Brae Fell Charlton Gill

Saddleback, Charleton Gill. 17/5/09

This distinctive mound in Charleton Gill is soon to be obscured from view due to the newly planted trees which now cover its slopes.

Brae Fell Summit

The summit. 17/5/09

Wainwright's drawing shows no background to this cairn, perhaps the weather was not in his favour. To add interest I have included the Skiddaw massif in the distance.

Brae Fell from Fellside

Brae Fell from near Fell Side. 17/5/09

The fell is just still visible from this position on the Caldbeck road.

Fell complete.
