Andy Beck- The Wainwrights in colour.

The sketches shown here are the images that I have so far produced for this "Wainwright". The views are taken from the exact spot where A.W. stood to illustrate his seven pictorial guides. The comparative views are mainly different due to the time of day, weather conditions and seasonal differences. The originals of my sketches are approximately twice as wide and twice as high as A.W's pen and ink drawings. I have added notes to give more information to each sketch.

All images are the copyright of the artist.

To obtain these references has required 1 day of walking:  14/05/08, 19/9/10 (click on the dates to see the photos)

Castle Crag 1

Castle Crag from the south. 14/05/08

Here the only difference between A.W.'s depiction of the view and mine is the increased amount of tree growth.

Castle Crag summit quarry

Tress come and trees go but the quarry remains virtually unchanged.

Castle Crag Millicans cave

The Attic. 14/05/08

One of two openings which form Millican's caves, this one being the smaller. Not much has changed since A.W's day.

The trees have mostly gone from the entrance to the cave.

Castle Crag Mine level

Old Quarry workings 14/05/08

The old level entrance has gained a bit more moss and the small hut is a little dilapidated.

I have included the background trees and Low Scawdel in this summit sketch. The "professionally-made round flat-topped cairn" is now looking a bit worse for wear.

This Fell is now complete.
