To obtain these references has so far required 3 days of walking: 03/9/07, 1/12/08, 30/1/09 (click on the dates to see the photos) Coniston Old Man 2633'
From Red Dell Head. 3/9/07 This was quite an early reference obtained on this project and the light was just right as we descended off Wetherlam to get this shot.
Waterfalls in Church Beck. 10/11/10 It can be seen from my sketch that as a comparison there is a lot less water than in AW's drawing. I was there on a normal sort of a day so perhaps AW captured the scene after a particularly heavy period of rain.
Northern Coniston Fells 2/8/09 A view for the northern Coniston Fells from the road just out of Little Langdale.
Coniston Old Man from Low Water 10/11/10
Charmer's Grave. 30/1/09 Possibly one of the most difficult references to obtain, this small engraved stone was only located with the expert help of Andrew Leaney. The stone has obviously suffered some damage since Wainwright drew it but there it is, located somewhere, hopefully for years to come.
Boo Tarn 30/1/09 This small tarn sits adjacent to the Walna Scar Road. It is heavily reeded and hardly worth a glance let alone a painting.
Bursting Stone Quarry. 30/1/09 The continued working of the quarry has meant that the cave drawn by Wainwright has now been swallowed up up hundreds of tons of quarry spoil. This is my best estimation for its location, the clue being the stream emitting from the heap.
Boulder Valley. 10/11/10 It took a couple of visits and a fair amount of time to locate this view in Boulder Valley but persistence paid off.
The Pudding Stone. 1/12/08 This huge boulder sits at the bottom end of the appropriately named Boulder Valley
Coppermines Valley 10/11/10 Once an area of intense mining activity, the Coppermines Valley is now being reclaimed by nature.
The summit. 3/9/07 The large man-made platform supports the cairn which is now bigger and in a slightly different position. Seldom are you alone on this top so, as AW did, I have included some fellow walkers.
Typical rock formations on the summit. 30/1/09 It was difficult in the winter conditions to identify the rocks which AW drew but after a bit of searching I found this grouping which I'm pretty sure are the correct feature.
The summit from the north. 1/12/08 A dusting of snow on the summit with its distinctive cairn on the platform.
The Coniston Fells 1/12/08 One of the sketches where I planned to get the view in similar weather conditions as the original drawing. Snow on the tops of Brim Fell and Swirl How as spindrift blows around my feet.
Dow Crag 1/12/09 Early sun picks out the rock buttresses of this climbers playground. more sketches to follow shortly.
