Andy Beck- The Wainwrights in colour.

The sketches shown here are the images that I have so far produced for this "Wainwright". The views are taken from the exact spot where A.W. stood to illustrate his seven pictorial guides. The comparative views are mainly different due to the time of day, weather conditions and seasonal differences. The originals of my sketches are approximately twice as wide and twice as high as A.W's pen and ink drawings. I have added notes to give more information to each sketch.

All images are the copyright of the artist.

To obtain these references has required 3 days of walking: 23/9/083/10/08, 24/10/08  (click on the dates to see the photos)

A fine view of the Crinkles from this neighbouring top.

Outcrop of rocks. 23/9/08

Adam-a-cove has several rocky outcrops that are made up of these striated boulders. I was able to locate the actual one in AW's drawing after some investigation. The background is westward towards Eskdale.

The forground footpath is more eroded and the small cairn which is in AW's drawing has now gone.

Crinkle Crags, the fifth crinkle

The Fifth Crinkle. 23/9/08

The reference photograph was taken looking directly into the sun which wasn't ideal. However, in the sketch, the angle of the lighting only seems to enhance the 3d effect of the crags.

Surprisingly the cairn is only slightly bigger now than when drawn in the late 50's.

Crinkle Crags, The highest Crinkle

The Highest Crinkle. 23/9/08

The problem that occured in obtaining these reference on this day was that my subjects were either directly facing the sun or directly away for it. This made it a challenge to give them a shape with shadows. The Bad Step, seen below, is located in the shadow area of the large rock face in the centre of the sketch.

The boulder gully that leads up to The Bad Step. Not ideal light conditions as the sun was behind me.

The Eastern Face. 23/9/08

AW's small diagram was really to illustrate the features and routes of the eastern face but I decided to produve this small sketch of it anyway.

Crinkle Crags, Bowfell

Bowfell 23/9/08

From the descent off Shelter Crags Bowfell shows it's southern face. The series of gullies "The Links" are highlighted by the afternoon sun.

 Fell Complete.
