Gallery Home >Wainwrights in Colour >Book 1 (Eastern) > Dove Crag Andy Beck- The Wainwrights in colour. The sketches shown here are the images that I have so far produced for this "Wainwright". The views are taken from the exact spot where A.W. stood to illustrate his seven pictorial guides. The comparative views are mainly different due to the time of day, weather conditions and seasonal differences. The originals of my sketches are approximately twice as wide and twice as high as A.W's pen and ink drawings. I have added notes to give more information to each sketch. All images are the copyright of the artist. To obtain these references has required 2 days of walking: 18/9/07, 25/11/08, (click on the dates to see the photos) Dove Crag 2603'
From Dovedale. 25/11/08 An early start meant that as I approached the fell along Dovedale the first of the winter morning light was hitting the top of the fell. Its was worth getting out of bed in the dark to capture a scene like this.
Dove Falls 25/11/08 Over time the flow of Dove Falls has changed somewhat. This sketch as in A.W's illustration shows the lesser and higher cascade of the Dove Falls.
The Summit 25/11/08 A light covering snow but the summit cairn is still discernable.
The Cairn on High Bakestones 25/11/08 As AW commented, this fine cairn still stands as it did in his day.
Dovedale. 25/11/08 It was luck more than good judgement that I was able to capture this scene at almost the same time of day as AW. The shadow on the crag on the left is at almost the same level as shown in his drawing. The painting doesn't show the precarious angle of the snowy slope on which I stood to obtain this reference.
Fell Complete.
