Andy Beck- The Wainwrights in colour.

The sketches shown here are the images that I have so far produced for this "Wainwright". The views are taken from the exact spot where A.W. stood to illustrate his seven pictorial guides. The comparative views are mainly different due to the time of day, weather conditions and seasonal differences. The originals of my sketches are approximately twice as wide and twice as high as A.W's pen and ink drawings. I have added notes to give more information to each sketch.

All images are the copyright of the artist.

To obtain these references has required 4 days of walking: 18/9/07, 2/1/09, 1/9/09, 12/4/10 (click on the dates to see the photos)

Fairfield                                                      2863'

Fairfield

From Grisedale Tarn. 25/9/09

This group of boulders lies a little off the path from Raise Beck with the one in the foreground being such a distictive shape. Aw in his drawing slightly exaggerated the shape of the fell possibly just to make it fit better on the page.

Fairfield 4a

Cofa Pike and the north-east ridge. 18/9/07

Helvellyn forms the horizon above the undulating Cofa Pike ridge. The red scree slope in the foreground adds a rich colour to the scene.

Fairfield 4b

Greenhow End 18/9/07

The inclusion of the background gives the extra dimension to this view compared to AW's drawing.

Fairfield Scrubby Crag

Scrubby Crag. 18/9/07

A view taken from the depression between Fairfield and Hart Crag.

Fairfield Black crag

Black Crag. 1/9/09

To obtain this refernce meant a long walk there and back into the valley of Rydal. From the lack of footpaths it is obvious that this is unfrequented territory by walkers.

Fairfield 5

Cofa Pike. 18/09/07

The rock shapes remain mostly unchanged since A.W's time.

Fairfield 6

Cascade, Tongue Gill. 2/1/09

The day I obtained this reference in early January 2009 the falls were almost totally frozen. Ironically I painted this sketch in early July during a heatwave.

Fairfield Dovedale

The head of Deepdale. 12/4/10

Snow hangs in the gullies of the eastern slopes of the fell. Oddly Wainwright in his drawing made Cofa Pike smaller than it is in reality.

Fairfield Greenhow end

The cliffs of Fairfield. 12/4/10

Seen from Greenhow End, not a regular place for walkers but a fine location.

Fairfield summit

The summit. 18/9/07

There are several piles of stones on the summit plateau, some formed into wind shelters. The actual summit cairn shown here is located quite close to the edge of the summit.

Fairfield Crags

The north face. 12/4/10

I had planned my route on this day especially to capture this scene in as similar conditions to AW's drawing as possibly with some snow in the gullies.

Fell Complete.
