Andy Beck- The Wainwrights in colour.

The sketches shown here are the images that I have so far produced for this "Wainwright". The views are taken from the exact spot where A.W. stood to illustrate his seven pictorial guides. The comparative views are mainly different due to the time of day, weather conditions and seasonal differences. The originals of my sketches are approximately twice as wide and twice as high as A.W's pen and ink drawings. I have added notes to give more information to each sketch.

All images are the copyright of the artist.

Gavel Fell                                                     1720'

Gavel Fell

From the terrace path. 31/5/09

From just slightly above the terrace path below Carling Knott the scene is the same as in AW's drawing, including the same rock step in the foreground

Gavel Fell 1b

High Nook Farm. 31/5/09

A scene relatively unchanged since the early '60s when Wainwright drew it. I have include chickens in place of his pigs?

Floutern Kop stone circle

Pit Circle, Floutern Cop 12/11/08

Not quite as distinct as in the early '60's this circle of stones has now become overgrown with reeds but is still discernable.

Gavel fell mine shaft

Old Shaft. 31/5/09

In the revised versions of the Pictorial Guides it states that this mine shaft for the old lead mine has "now gone". I can confirm that in fact the shaft is still there and looking remarkably the same as it was 50 years ago.

Gavel fell summit

The Summit. 31/5/09

The nearby fence has been re-instated in close proximity to the summit cairn with the north-western fells behind.

Gavel Fell subsidary top

The subsidiary top. 31/5/09

A few more stones have been added to this small mound.

 Fell complete.
