Andy Beck- The Wainwrights in colour.

The sketches shown here are the images that I have so far produced for this "Wainwright". The views are taken from the exact spot where A.W. stood to illustrate his seven pictorial guides. The comparative views are mainly different due to the time of day, weather conditions and seasonal differences. The originals of my sketches are approximately twice as wide and twice as high as A.W's pen and ink drawings. I have added notes to give more information to each sketch.

All images are the copyright of the artist.

To obtain these references has required 2 days of walking: 29/6/07, 14/9/08 (click on the dates to see the photos)

Gibson Knott                                                      1379'

Gibson Knott 1

Gibson Knott from Helm Crag  14/9/08.

From the rising path to Helm Crag A.W. took his reference photograph for Gibson Knott. He did include Calf Crag- seen here on the left- but excluded the ridge of Ullscarf behind and the slopes of Steel Fell on the right. The ridge path is now more prominent.

Gibson Knott summit

The Summit  14/9/08.

Of all the summits so far, this probably is the one that remains relatively unchanged since A.W. drew it. This is perhaps because the summit of Gibson Knott is now recognised to be approximately 400m south east from this point. This rock is now rarely visited judging by the carpet of grass on the other side of these top rocks.

Gibson Knott Horn Crag

Horn Crag  14/9/08.

This juniper covered out-crop forms the south-eastern face of the fell. From this angle looking down into Far Easedale, Grasmere can be seen in the distance.

This Fell is now complete.
