Gallery Home >Wainwrights in Colour >Book 5 (Northern) > Great Cockup Andy Beck- The Wainwrights in colour. The sketches shown here are the images that I have so far produced for this "Wainwright". The views are taken from the exact spot where A.W. stood to illustrate his seven pictorial guides. The comparative views are mainly different due to the time of day, weather conditions and seasonal differences. The originals of my sketches are approximately twice as wide and twice as high as A.W's pen and ink drawings. I have added notes to give more information to each sketch. All images are the copyright of the artist. To obtain these references has required 1 day of walking: 20/5/09 (click on the dates to see the photos) Great Cockup. 1720' approx.
From Longlands. 17/5/09 Wainwright made the fell a touch more dramatic than it actually is so I have made it less so. Skiddaw was also omitted from the right hand side of his drawing. The foreground embankment has changed, perhaps for some widening of the road and has recently be re-planted with young hedgerow,
Orthwaite Hall. 17/5/09 One of the smallest sketches but with plenty of detail.
Brockle Crag. 18/5/09 White Quartzite rocks amongst the darker grey boulders of this natural feature on the flanks of the fell.
The Boulder. 20/5/09 This lone boulder, not particularly large, sits amongst the grass with Burn Tod behind.
The Dash Valley. 20/5/09 Bakestall sits at the valley head with the waters of Dash Falls on the left.
The summit. 20/5/09 Summer sun and showers over Bakestall and Skiddaw from the summit of Great Cockup. A small cairn on the grassy plateau now makes the highest point of the fell. Fell complete. back to on location 20/5/09 click here.
