Andy Beck- The Wainwrights in colour.

The sketches shown here are the images that I have so far produced for this "Wainwright". The views are taken from the exact spot where A.W. stood to illustrate his seven pictorial guides. The comparative views are mainly different due to the time of day, weather conditions and seasonal differences. The originals of my sketches are approximately twice as wide and twice as high as A.W's pen and ink drawings. I have added notes to give more information to each sketch.

All images are the copyright of the artist.

To obtain these references has required 3 days of walking: 3/7/06, 12/6/09 10/4/11 (click on the dates to see the photos)

Great End from Sty Head. 10/4/11

Late afternoon light on the fell from the far side of Sty Head Tarn. AW included the right hand shore of the tarn which was possibly a bit of artistic license.

Great End- Borrowdale

Borrowdale. 12/6/09

AW entitles this as "Borrowdale from the top of Central Gully" to be more precise its actually from the top of gully "C" (see Great End 13).

Cust's Gully- the pitch. 10/4/11

The last of the snow made this awkward to visit, fortunately I didnt have to venture any further.

Great End Custs Gully

Cust's Gully from below. 10/4/11

Patches of snow still linger in this north facing cleft, the Chockstone sits firmly above.

Cust's Gully from above. 12/6/09

The Chockstone sits tight above the gap, far below there is just a glimpse of Sprinkling Tarn.

Great End branch gully

Branch Gully. 10/4/11

As described in the pictorial guide this route is blocked by a moss covered boulder.

Great End Skew Gill

In Skew Gill. 10/4/11

The gill narrows near the top making progress challenging.

Great End Skew Gill

Lower entrance Skew Gill. 10/4/11

This view is from close to the corridor route, most walkers don't venture into here.

The summit. 12.6.09

A small cairn on a rocky platform. Great Gable behind and to the right.

Fell complete.
