Andy Beck- The Wainwrights in colour.

The sketches shown here are the images that I have so far produced for this "Wainwright". The views are taken from the exact spot where A.W. stood to illustrate his seven pictorial guides. The comparative views are mainly different due to the time of day, weather conditions and seasonal differences. The originals of my sketches are approximately twice as wide and twice as high as A.W's pen and ink drawings. I have added notes to give more information to each sketch.

All images are the copyright of the artist.

Great Mell Fell                                                     1760'

Great Mell Fell 1

From Great Meldrum. 19/6/09

The rounded slopes of the fell seen from across the valley, relatively unchanged since AW took in this view.

Great Mell Fell 3a

Notice. 4/3/08

Gone are the days when the fell was under the control of the War Department. As the sign that AW drew has also gone I thought it would be appropriate to show the replacement from the National Trust.

Great Mell Fell 3b

The summit 4/3/08

The post has gone and been replaced with a small cairn. From AW's drawing there was no indication of his direction of view but I have orientated the aspect so that the northern fells feature.

Great Mell Fell 3c

The highest tree. 4/3/08

It's always a thrill to locate these reference points especially when like here I could identify the same tree about 55 years after AW.

Fell complete.
