Andy Beck- The Wainwrights in colour.

Gallery Home >Wainwrights in Colour >Book 7 (Western) > Grike

The sketches shown here are the images that I have so far produced for this "Wainwright". The views are taken from the exact spot where A.W. stood to illustrate his seven pictorial guides. The comparative views are mainly different due to the time of day, weather conditions and seasonal differences. The originals of my sketches are approximately twice as wide and twice as high as A.W's pen and ink drawings. I have added notes to give more information to each sketch.

All images are the copyright of the artist.

Grike                                                     1596'

Grike 1

Grike. 12/11/08

No cows in the field when I saw this view but the trees in the near hedgerow stand almost as they did when AW viewed them. Forestry now covers some of the fell's slopes.

Grike 1b

From Kinniside Stone Circle. 9/11/08

Forestation on the fell side has left only the very summit of Grike in view from this location.

Grike 2

Kinniside Stone Circle. 13/11/08

Painting the stone circle under a full moon gives an air of mystery to the location. The distant fells are now mostly hidden behind the forestry plantation.

Grike 4

The Great Stone of Blakeley. 9/11/08

One of A.W's smallest drawings on all of the seven guides. This large boulder goes un-noticed by most walkers.

Grike 5

The summit. 9/11/08

The "baby" cairns which AW drew in this view have either been incorporated into this now larger cairn or another one to the right. Unfortunately low cloud obscured the summit of Pillar to the right of the cairn but the High Stile ridge on the left was still visible.

Fell complete.
