Andy Beck- The Wainwrights in colour.

The sketches shown here are the images that I have so far produced for this "Wainwright". The views are taken from the exact spot where A.W. stood to illustrate his seven pictorial guides. The comparative views are mainly different due to the time of day, weather conditions and seasonal differences. The originals of my sketches are approximately twice as wide and twice as high as A.W's pen and ink drawings. I have added notes to give more information to each sketch.

All images are the copyright of the artist.

To obtain these references has required 2 days of walking: 14/11/07, 4/1/09 (click on the dates to see the photos)

High Seat                                                      1995'

High Seat from Fisher Crag

High Seat from Fisher Crag

High Seat 1b

Reecastle Crag. 4/1/09

The road to Watendlath follows the wall under the crag.

Ashness Falls

Falls in Ashness Gill, 4/1/09

An awkward location to visit requiring a steep ascent up the side of the gill on very loose ground. On this day the water was almost completely frozen, quite difficult to put over on a small watercolour.

Ashness Bridge

Ashness Bridge. 4/1/09

AW opted for a small sketch from below the bridge whereas the scene from above this point is very well photographed with Derwentwater in the distance.

Wathendlath from Goat crag

Watendlath from Goat Crags. 4/1/09

With Great Crag on the left and big hills in the distance, this is a fine viewpoint.

High Seat, Litts Memorial

Litt's Memorial. 14/11/07

These two stone markers are difficult to locate being only about 24" tall. This was one of A.W's smallest illustrations for any of the seven guides.

High Seat summit

The Summit. 14/11/07

The rocky outcrop is complemented by a stone triangulation point. Ullscarf and High Raise form the skyline.

Fell complete.
