Gallery Home >Wainwrights in Colour >Book 4 (Southern) > Holme Fell Andy Beck- The Wainwrights in colour. The sketches shown here are the images that I have so far produced for this "Wainwright". The views are taken from the exact spot where A.W. stood to illustrate his seven pictorial guides. The comparative views are mainly different due to the time of day, weather conditions and seasonal differences. The originals of my sketches are approximately twice as wide and twice as high as A.W's pen and ink drawings. I have added notes to give more information to each sketch. All images are the copyright of the artist. To obtain these references has required 1 day of walking:, 30/7/09 (click on the dates to see the photos) Holme Fell 1040'
From Tunnel Quarry Low Fell. 30/7/09 This view was quite difficult to locate as the old quarry buildings which AW illustrated in the foreground are now just a pile of slate.
Ivy Crag from the north ridge. 30/7/09 The heather and bracken covered slopes of the high ground seen from the ridge to the north.
The main cairn, Ivy Crag. 30/7/09 This cairn is actually more substantial that the one on the adjacent main summit. I have included the background of Helvellyn and Fairfield.
The Summit. 30/7/09 These days the summit platform of rock is topped by a small cairn.
Hodge Close Quarry. 30/7/09 It took me some time to interpret AW's small drawing on site but I realised that his black and white photograph possibly was misleading due to quality. His small drawing gives the impression that some of the right hand wall is part of the far side of the quarry. Also, at the time he was there the quarry was still being worked and the water may not have been at a much lower level and therefore not in view in his photograph.
