Andy Beck- The Wainwrights in colour.

The sketches shown here are the images that I have so far produced for this "Wainwright". The views are taken from the exact spot where A.W. stood to illustrate his seven pictorial guides. The comparative views are mainly different due to the time of day, weather conditions and seasonal differences. The originals of my sketches are approximately twice as wide and twice as high as A.W's pen and ink drawings. I have added notes to give more information to each sketch.

All images are the copyright of the artist.

To obtain these references has so far required 2 days of walking: 6/5/07, 29/5/09, 10/10/10(click on the dates to see the photos)

Ill Bell                                                     2476'

Ill Bell from Upper Kentmere

From Upper Kentmere. 10/10/10

This view is taken from the lower slopes of Gavel Crag. Looking directly south made it slightly awkward for the lighting but it gave Ill Bell a soft atmosphere.

Ill Bell 3

The Ill Bell ridge from Stile End. 29/5/09

A fine view up the Kentmere valley in summer afternoon sun.

Ill Bell 6a

The summit. 25/5/09

The group of cairns on the sumit have changed slightly since AW's day. The one in the foreground seems to have been completely rebuilt just to the right of the original location.

Ill Bell Main Cairn

The main cairn. 29/5/09

The main cairn, a solid construction on a platform of rock.

Thornthwaite Crag and Froswick

Thornthwaite Crag and Froswick. 10/10/10

A fine view of the ridge back to Thornthwaite Beacon.

Ill Bell 9b

Rainsbarrow Cove and Yoke. 6/5/07

The view back to Yoke from near the summit of Ill Bell.

Ill bell and kentmere

Ill Bell and the head of Kentmere. 10/10/10

The cloud justs lifts enough to reveal the very top of Ill Bell. It took a bit of research beforehand to find the location of this sketch, luckily the research paid off.

Fell complete.
