Andy Beck- The Wainwrights in colour.

The sketches shown here are the images that I have so far produced for this "Wainwright". The views are taken from the exact spot where A.W. stood to illustrate his seven pictorial guides. The comparative views are mainly different due to the time of day, weather conditions and seasonal differences. The originals of my sketches are approximately twice as wide and twice as high as A.W's pen and ink drawings. I have added notes to give more information to each sketch.

All images are the copyright of the artist.

Red Screes                                                     2541'

From Wansfell. 6/2/09

I had to pick the day to get this view to get a comparison to AW's winter scene. Not quite as much drifted snow in my painting but still a good seasonal comparison.

The Kirk Stone

Only the inclusion of the slopes of Caudale Moor behind make this sketch different to AW's view.

Looking down on the Kirkstone Pass Inn. 25/11/08

The car park on this side of the road is the main addition since the early '50s.

The summit. 25/11/08

The red rock that gives the fell its name just show through the snow cover. The large summit shelter shown in Wainwright's drawing has been re-sited to the right and isn't such an impressive mound.

Red Screes 8

Patterdale from the summit. 25/11/08

Late afternoon light crosses Middle Dodd and the hills that surround Brotherswater. The snow line was only on the highest fells.

The south-east combe. 25/11/08

A decent covering of snow for late November.

The north-east combe. 25/11/08

More snow on the fell than on the day AW took his reference.
