Andy Beck- The Wainwrights in colour.

The sketches shown here are the images that I have so far produced for this "Wainwright". The views are taken from the exact spot where A.W. stood to illustrate his seven pictorial guides. The comparative views are mainly different due to the time of day, weather conditions and seasonal differences. The originals of my sketches are approximately twice as wide and twice as high as A.W's pen and ink drawings. I have added notes to give more information to each sketch.

All images are the copyright of the artist.

To obtain these references has required 3 days of walking:  2/1/09, 19/8/10, 10/9/10 (click on the dates to see the photos)

Seat Sandal                                                     2415'

Seat Sandal

From Grasmere. 16/3/10

A scene from the Red Bank road looking back towards Grasmere village. The shrubs on the lake shore in the foreground of AW's drawing have gone which is fortunate as they may have obscured this fine view.

Seat Sandal Raise beck

Cascades, Raise Beck. 10/9/10

It took a couple of visits to Raise beck to locate this view exactly, the first visit was at a time of dry weather and the beck was all but dry. On my second visit it took time to confirm this was the exact cascade as the rock step has eroded on the left so as to change the actual shape of the falls.

Seat Sandal, Gavel Crag

Gavel Crag (From the north) 2/1/09

I was confused when seeking out this crag. I couldn't get AW's drawing to relate to the present rock formations. After some re-checking it became apparent that the Arete drawn by AW had fallen into the valley below. This sketch is how it appears today.

Seat Sandal, Gavel Crag

Gavel Crag (Looking down on the arête) 2/1/09

Due to the collapse of part of the crag the top third of this point of rock is now missing.

Seat sandal summit

The summit. 19/8/10

It took a couple of visits to obtain this view, the first time low cloud obscured the tops of Fairfield and St. Sunday Crag.

Ullswater from Seat Sandal

Ullswater from Seat Sandal. 19/8/10

This view is obtained by walking about 80m north east of the summit cairn.
