Andy Beck- The Wainwrights in colour.

The sketches shown here are the images that I have so far produced for this "Wainwright". The views are taken from the exact spot where A.W. stood to illustrate his seven pictorial guides. The comparative views are mainly different due to the time of day, weather conditions and seasonal differences. The originals of my sketches are approximately twice as wide and twice as high as A.W's pen and ink drawings. I have added notes to give more information to each sketch.

All images are the copyright of the artist.

To obtain these references has required 3 days of walking: 8/7/07, 19/5/09, 20/5/09 (click on the dates to see the photos)

Skiddaw from Burntod Gill

Skiddaw from Burntod Gill. 20/5/09

Not quite as dramatic as in AW's drawing but still an impressive viewpoint of Skiddaw.

Skiddaw, Skiddaw House

Skiddaw House. 18/5/09

This remote dwelling has lost some of its protective woodland compared to AW's drawing. Otherwise there have been very minor changes.

Howell memorial

The Howell Monument. 16/5/09

Only a very small sketch here by AW but I cant help wondering why he didnt draw it more face on?

Fox Bield

Fox Bield. 19/5/09

This rugged outcrop of rocks is located high on a long scree field, rather awkward to attain.

Ullock Pike

Ullock Pike from Randel Crag. 8/7/07

Finding this small arete of rocks was quite a challenge on this little used route.

Ullock Pike ridge

Southerndale 8/7/09

The Ullock Pike ridge on the right which forms a great route to the summit of Skiddaw.

Skiddaw

Barkbethdale. 8/7/07

Sunlight on the screes of Skiddaw.

Skiddaw summit

The Summit. 19/5/09

A field of slate near the summit trig point which now stands more proud of the surface, also the summit shelter has crept away from the top somewhat.

Skiddaw top

Looking North. 19/5/09

This small cairn marks the south top with a view to the main summit.

Gibraltar crag

North Top and Gibraltar Crag. 19/5/09

The cairn on the top is now not as prominent in Wainwright's drawing.

Fell Complete.
