Gallery Home >Wainwrights in Colour >Book 4 (Southern) > Swirl How Andy Beck- The Wainwrights in colour. The sketches shown here are the images that I have so far produced for this "Wainwright". The views are taken from the exact spot where A.W. stood to illustrate his seven pictorial guides. The comparative views are mainly different due to the time of day, weather conditions and seasonal differences. The originals of my sketches are approximately twice as wide and twice as high as A.W's pen and ink drawings. I have added notes to give more information to each sketch. All images are the copyright of the artist. To obtain these references has required 3 days of walking: 03/9/07, 24/10/08, 1/12/08 (click on the dates to see the photos) Swirl How 2630'
Swirl How from Rough Crags. 24/10/08. Swirl How is the peak on the left in this picture. Great Carrs on the right appears to be the higher fell when viewed from this location but only due to the fact it is nearer. The holly tree in the foreground remains almost unchanged since AW obtained his reference 50years ago, however Greenburn Tarn has less of a uniform shape.
Prison Band. 3/9/07 Swirl How summit and it's eastern ridge known as Prison Band. The path shown has taken a slightly different route since AW drew the same scene.
The Summit. 24/6/08 Now the summit cairn is a much neater construction but still in its fine location near the northern slopes of the fell.
This Fell is now complete.
