Andy Beck- The Wainwrights in colour.

The sketches shown here are the images that I have so far produced for this "Wainwright". The views are taken from the exact spot where A.W. stood to illustrate his seven pictorial guides. The comparative views are mainly different due to the time of day, weather conditions and seasonal differences. The originals of my sketches are approximately twice as wide and twice as high as A.W's pen and ink drawings. I have added notes to give more information to each sketch.

All images are the copyright of the artist.

To obtain these references has required 2 days of walking: 13/4/08, 31/3/09 (click on the dates to see the photos)

The view of the fell is now mostly screened by trees so this visit before the trees came into leaf was well timed. Otherwise the view is unchanged.

Unusually AW doesn't actually title this sketch but it is a view from the road near Woodhow farm.

Not only can Illgill Head be seen in this view as shown by Wainwright but also the distant fells of Great Gable, Kirk Fell and Yewbarrow.

It was by pure chance that as I was obtaining the refernce for this sketch that completely unexpectedly a couple came and stood just at the same point where AW had drawn a single figure. It turned out that they were German visitors just taking in a fell or two. Interestingly in AW's sketch he gives the impression that Wastwater, seen far below, extends further than it actually does. Possibly this is due to a poor quality reference photograph from which he was working.

Wastwater Screes Whin Rigg

Wastwater Screes. 13/4/08

After a long day on the fells I was fortunate to capture this reference just as the last light of the day was touching the screes that tumble down from Whin Rigg. This is one of only three double page drawings in all of the Pictorial Guides.

Fell complete.
