4th March 2008- Four Fells

A cold spell had brought snow showers to the North on Monday and with a cold night following, the forecast for Tuesday was a day of clear skies. Even though I am busy with painting commitments I couldn't miss this opportunity to capture perhaps the last snow of winter on the hills. I set off early to make the most of the whole day and had planned to complete several fells and gather references for my Wainwrights project.

The sun was not yet up when I reached Threlkeld so I took a stroll up to Tewet Tarn.

First light on the Coledale Horseshoe.

A short while later Blencathra in the early light.

I then headed down St. John's in the Vale to Thirlmere Dam to take in Raven Crag.

Raven Crag from the route up.

Zoe and Zeta on the summit, and still not even 8.30am!

Thirlmere and wintery hills.

Through the trees to High Seat.

Keeping to the West side of Thirlmere, I parked next at Launchy Gill to get some references that I needed.

Waterfalls in Launchy Gill

Back across Thirlmere to the snowy Fells.

Bell Crags and Launchy Gill.

Red Deer near Bell Crags, the same herd as I saw in Autumn. I spent some time chatting to a Gillie and a client here today before I moved on to Armboth fell.

A distant view of Great Gable and Pillar.

On AF summit, Helvellyn behind.

Blencathra from Armboth Fell near Fisher Crag.

High Seat from Fisher Crag.

I returned to the car via Launchy Gill. From here I had to go to Grasmere to buy some painting materials.

Helm Crag in the afternoon light.

From there it was back over Dunmail Raise to St John's in the Vale.

The Helvellyn range from the side of High Rigg.

Calfhow Pike and Great Dodd.

Helvellyn and Castle Rock

Skiddaw from near High Rigg summit.

Blencathra across the valley.

I had planned to take in at least one more fell after this and the light was so good that on the way back home I headed towards Great Mell fell.

The Pennines from the route up Great Mell Fell.

Little Mell Fell through the trees.

Looking South towards Place Fell and Red Screes.

The summit of Great Mell Fell. Snow still helps to pick out the details on Blencathra.

And a last shot as I descend Great Mell Fell. By luck more than planning, this view takes in the same hills as the very first photograph from today, just at both ends of a great day out.
