2nd. January 2009. Fairfield and Seat Sandal.

The first walk of the New Year and in cold conditions. A round from Grasmere taking in four of the Eastern fells.

A fine start to the day as we leave Grasmere with early sun on Helm Crag.

A cold Greenhead Gill.

Gaining height in the gill the views back to the Central fells were excellent.

After visiting the cascades in Greenhead Gill we took a direct route up to Stone Arthur, seen here.

Snow showers on the Coniston Fells from Stone Arthur summit.

The rising path up to Great Rigg provides impressive views to the north of Dollywagon Pike over Grisedale Hause.

Great Gable and Pillar over frosted ridges to the west.

The path to a busy Great Rigg.

Vole hunting.

The Helvellyn range from Great Rigg summit.

Seat Sandal where we were to visit later. Our route would take us from that summit down past Gavel Crag the main area of shadow on the craggy face.

An even better view over to Great Gable.

Looking back to Windermere as we head up to Fairfield.

Approaching Fairfield summit in cloud.

Light over Morecambe Bay. Fairfield summit shelter on the left.

A slight deviation from route gave this view over Cofa Pike and St. Sunday Crag. We then descended Fairfield to Grisedale Hause, mostly in cloud.

From the slopes of Seat Sandal looking over a frozen Grisedale Tarn.

Light changes minute by minute as we ascend.

St Sunday Crag just showing over the summit cairn of Seat Sandal.

Light on a distant Skiddaw.

The Coniston Fells through light snow. We were heading down to Gavel Crag and then into the valley of Tongue Gill

Looking back up to Gavel Crag from the very icy path near Tongue Gill. Gavel Crag proved a very exciting and interesting location for one of my Wainwright project subjects.

Cascades in Tongue Gill.

Almost last light behind Coniston Fells.  From here we left the path to traverse the contour of the west slope of Great Rigg to take us back to Stone Arthur.

Pinks behind Pike O'Blisco.

Almost running I was able to photograph the very last of the sun on Stone Arthur. It was just about light enough to take pictures, hence the slight blur but what a great end to a great day out as we headed back to the car at Grasmere.
