6th November 2008 . Lank Rigg.

Due to the location of the references on this fell our visit to Lank Rigg involved quite a long route around the hill before reaching the summit via the lesser top of Whoap. Another mostly overcast day meant the photographs are not spectacular but hopefully give a flavour of the day.

Starting at Coldfell Gate the route leads on to the moor with a clear view of Lank Rigg ahead.

A short diversion took us to the old Matty Benns bridge over the River Calder.

Some time was spent seeking out the ancient remains featured on the Lank Rigg 2 page of Wainwright's guide.

By chance we met Chris Jesty, who is currently revising all seven of the Wainwright Pictorial guides.

From here we were to contour over the slopes of lank Rigg on the left following the line of Worm Gill.

The meandering Worm Gill.

Looking back past the Water Intake Works and sheepfold on Worm Gill.

The dogs investigate a large badger sett which we came across much further up on the open fellside, obviously still occupied.

Crossing the small beck before heading up towards Whoap.

Caw Fell from the slopes of Whoap.

Zeta beckons Esther on. Lank Rigg behind.

The lone boulder on the summit of Whoap. Starling Dodd is directly behind with Grasmoor away on the left.

Leaving Whoap and climbing up towards Lank Rigg summit.

The tarn on Lank Rigg summit. Low cloud had swirled around for the past five minutes making it quite dark.

We descended via Boat How and across Town bank to return to the start. It had been quite a long route just to visit the one hill but still interesting to visit new ground.
